1.1.1 Antacids

SELF-CARE: NHS England has published guidance for various common conditions for which over the counter (OTC) items should not be routinely prescribed in primary care. One of these conditions is indigestion and heartburn.

Many of these products are cheap to buy and are readily available OTC along with advice from pharmacies. Some self-care medicines are available from shops and supermarkets. 

Magnesium trisilicate 
  • Oral suspension (contains about 6mmol of sodium in 10ml, laxative) (£2.08 = 200ml)   OTC ITEM

Indications

  • 10–20ml in water three times daily or as required
Co-magaldrox
  • Oral suspensionSF 195mg/220mg (low sodium, bowel neutral) (£2.99 = 500ml)   OTC ITEM

Indications

  • 10–20ml, 20–60 minutes after meals and at bedtime or when required
Antacid and oxetacaine
  • Oral suspensionSF (unlicensed preparation)

Indications

  • Painful swallowing, during and following radiotherapy to the head & neck and chest areas (see ENT chapter)
