1.7.2 Compound haemorrhoidal preparations with corticosteroids

Anusol HC

(Benzyl benzoate with bismuth oxide, bismuth subgallate, hydrocortisone acetate, peru balsam and zinc oxide)

  • Ointment (£6.00 = 30g)
  • Suppositories (£4.24 = 12 suppositories)

Indications and dose

  • Haemorrhoids, pruritus ani
    • Apply (or insert suppository) twice daily for no longer than 7 days, in the morning and at night, an additional dose should be applied (or inserted) after a bowel movement.

  1. Prescribe by brand (to aid identification where products contain multiple ingredients, or to prevent confusion where multiple brands contain similar ingredients).
Scheriproct

(Cinchocaine with prednisolone)

  • Ointment (£3.23 = 30g)
  • Suppositories (£1.52 = 12 suppositories)

Indications and dose

  • Haemorrhoids, pruritus ani
    • Insert 1 suppository daily after a bowel movement, for 5–7 days (in severe cases initially 2–3 times daily).

    (Hydrocortisone 0.275% with lidocaine 5%)

    • Ointment (£4.19 = 20g)

      • Apply several times daily; short-term use only.
