Disinfectants and cleansers are important in the treatment of skin conditions. Cetrimide, which has detergent properties, and chlorhexidine are both useful disinfectants. Sodium chloride 0.9% is suitable for general cleansing of skin and wounds whereas emulsifying ointment is best for scaling disorders (see section 13.2.1 Emollients). Povidone iodine is preferred to chlorinated solutions which are too irritant and no longer recommended.
