2.2.5 Osmotic diuretics

Intravenous osmotic diuretics are used mostly for cerebral oedema. They expand blood volume acutely so they should be avoided in heart failure.

Mannitol
  • Intravenous infusion 10%, 20%

Caution

  • Mannitol should be stored at 20-30oC to prevent crystallisation that occurs at lower temperatures. The pack should be examined before use.
