Deficiency is an extremely rare condition in developed countries and ascorbic acid is not recommended. The recognised method of prevention of scurvy is through the diet, by increasing the intake of foods containing Vitamin C, such as citrus fruit, tomatoes, green vegetables and fortified foods.
In iron deficiency states ascorbic acid may increase gastro-intestinal iron absorption but its role in clinical practice is not established and also not recommended.
