Indications

• Acute sinusitis - (second line)
• Acute cough, bronchitis
• Acute exacerbation of COPD
• Community acquired pneumonia - (second line)
• Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (acute exacerbation)
• Cholecystitis - plus metronidazole
• Chlamydia trachomatis
• Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome - (second line)
• Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • plus ceftriaxone IM and metronidazole or
  • plus metronidazole (second line) (oral regime only)
• Bites (Human or Animal) - plus metronidazole (second line)
• Lyme disease
• Boils, carbuncles, folliculitis and paronychia - (second line)

Notes

1. Dispersible tablets are considerably more expensive than capsules and should be reserved for use only in individuals who are unable to swallow capsules

Lymecycline

Oxytetracycline

Demeclocycline hydrochloride

• Capsules 150mg (£238.41 = 28 capsules)

Notes

1. Demeclocycline is not used for the treatment of infection, but is used in the management of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone.

Minocycline

Following national guidance from NHS England, minocycline is not recommended for use for the treatment of acne due to an increased risk of adverse effects such as drug induced lupus, skin pigmentation and hepatitis.
